ABOUT MARSHALL

Marshall is a 12-year-old golfer with catastrophic confidence, locked in an eternal war with feedback. His career best is +3 over 18 holes on the NTPGA Junior Tour - a number he has personally reported to the mailman, two teachers, and a waiter who just wanted a drink order. He lives in The Trails in Frisco, four hundred yards from a golf course that has defeated him more times than any tournament field. Experts believe the course knows him too well.

Marshall's game has one documented vulnerability: the phrase "I can do this." Uttered exclusively after a mistake, it precedes a hero shot over water that his coach, his father, and the known laws of physics have all advised against. The shot does not come off. A +1 becomes a +3. The pond on 9 has collected 31 of his golf balls and considers him a founding patron.

This is one phase of the Uncoachability Cycle, the natural phenomenon that governs Marshall's development: he refuses coaching, delivers a tournament round best described as "educational," announces that he has learned his lesson, listens attentively for up to six days (a record), and then returns to phase one. Scientists have stopped trying to break the cycle and now simply chart it.

Before golf there was jiu jitsu, which Marshall retired from to make room for tournaments. Marshall also plays violin for his middle school orchestra and the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra - a career he has announced he is ending this year, at age twelve, to spend more time fishing. His parents have filed an appeal. Marshall has already packed his tackle box.

The fishing, to be clear, is going great. Marshall visits the local ponds daily, presents his lures with total confidence, and catches nothing of size. His career-best bass has been described by witnesses as "technically a fish." The bass of Frisco know him, respect him, and have collectively agreed to keep it that way. Marshall remains certain the big one is coming. After all - he can do this.
